Longtime comic and fan magazine publisher FantaCo is returning its publications to the Direct Market in August with three releases in the horror genre.
The Monster Art of Basil Gogos, prepared by Gogos’ longtime life partner Linda Touby, is a 200-page color softcover which uses Gogos’ incredible archives to show his creative process and how he produced his monster paintings, which graced Famous Monsters of Filmland covers, most famously. The volume will include many images not previously published. MSRP is $40, street date is July 31.
The new issue of Chris Balun’s "Gonzo-Gore Splatter mag," Deep Red Vol. 4, #1 has all-new articles, photos, reviews, and filmmaker, artist, and actor interviews, with the original "Splat-Pack" talking about genre films and lost classics. John Walter Szpunar will edit. This 94-page squarebound format will carry a $20 MSRP.
DarkARTs Vol. 1 will feature covers, pinups, and selected dark art by Marcelo Trom, Jim Whiting, Ahmed Raafat, Raymond Lowell, and Nate Osborne in an 11" x 17" 48-page art portfolio format at a $19.95 MSRP.
FantaCo, founded in 1978 by Tom Skulan in Albany, New York, was best known for publishing the comic work of Fred Hembeck and the Chronicles series of fan magazines, most notably X-Men Chronicles. FantaCo was also the name of Skulan’s Albany retail store, one of the first comic stores in the U.S. FantaCo plans to also revive Hore Shriek, Night of the Living Dead, and Famous Monsters Chronicles, Skulan said.
