Coda – the Next Creator-Owned Hit from Boom! Studios?

On May 2nd, the Wednesday before Free Comic Book Day, Boom! Studios is releasing Coda #1, kicking off a new creator-owned series from Si Spurrier (he of the recently announced Sandman Presents) and Matías Bergara. The idea is simple – welcome to a broken fantasy world where the bad guys won and magic is like petrol in Mad Max. And Boom! Studios is betting big on this book, which launches with a double sized first issue (still at $3.99) and guaranteeing to make it to twelve issues right out of the gate. These are the kinds of moves we typically see from Image.
Here’s how they solicited the first issue, with variant covers by names like Jae Lee and Jeff Stokely.
Simon Spurrier (The Spire, Godshaper) and Matías Bergara (Cannibal, Supergirl) present a broken fantasy world that’s perfect for fans of Mad Max and The Lord of the Rings. In the aftermath of an apocalypse which wiped out nearly all magic from a once-wondrous fantasy world, a former bard named Hum (a man of few words, so nicknamed because his standard reply is “hm”) seeks a way to save the soul of his wife with nothing but a foul-tempered mutant unicorn and his wits to protect him…but is unwillingly drawn into a brutal power struggle which will decide forever who rules the Weird Wasteland.
Boom! Studios has been talking this series up since February at ComicsPRO, constantly referring to it as a “big swing” for the company – Si Spurrier and Boom! Studios have previously given us Six Gun Gorilla and Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: Coronation (how many publishers outside the big two are launching over 20k these days? Aside from however Valiant managed to get retailers to order 40,000 of the new Shadowman?) and The Spire. President of Publishing and Marketing, Filip Sablik was giving out special ashcans of the first issue to retailers at the Diamond Retailer Summit yesterday
So not only does Spurrier have increased interest in his work after that Sandman announcement, but Boom! Studios has been doing better of late, even outside of the Mighty Morphin Power Ranger madness – with big original launches over the last year from Grass Kings to Mech Cadet Yu to Fence to Abbott and now gaining Premiere Publisher status, and at the very front of Diamond Previews, thanks to the alphabet.
And they’re seeing a lot of sell outs. Over and over.
Coda #1 is one of those Boom! Guarantee titles, meaning your local shop can order as much as they want and return unsold copies. But retailers have thus far under-anticipated potential demand. I’ve read a preview of the first issue and this one has all the makings of the next Seven to Eternity or Extremity.
Might it be worth getting in early?
