If I was buying all of their product and supporting them up until this point, this would make me lose interest in everything they produced going forward.
I use the analogy of a bus. A comic series gaining readers is like a bus picking up passengers. The bus starts it's journey and people hop on board. They take it for a ride and as long as they are content, they will stay on the bus and go to the next destination. If you create too many stopping points along the way or give the riders a reason to get off.... they will. The same is true of comics. Start a story, immerse the reader into the story so they want to know what happens next. Don't throw out distractions or reasons for the readers to quit reading. Keep them immersed in the stories. All the gimmicks in the word might get someone to look at the comics, but it's the stories that are going to keep the readers taking the ride. Word of mouth about the stories is the number one way to promote a comic.
