www.bleedingcool.com/2019/07/19/confirmed-idw-acquired-sunday-press-books/Posted by Rich Johnston July 19, 2019 Publisher’s Weekly has confirmed what Bleeding Cool told you two days ago, that IDW has acquired Sunday Press Books. Well, Publisher’s Weekly says that IDW bought Sunday Press, but from what we understand, ‘acquire’ is a more accurate term. They state that Sunday Press Books founder Peter Maresca will continue to oversee the publishing program while IDW will handle and expand the press’s distribution and marketing. IDW will also launch a digital publishing program for SPB’s classic restored works. Maresca said the acquisition will allow him to focus on curating new titles in a category—broadsheet newspaper strips—that seemed “destined to disappear. But the business end has been daunting. Partnering with IDW allows me to take advantage of their infrastructure, while concentrating on the production of new editions.” And now, if SPB wins its Eisner nomination tonight, IDW, will be able to add it to its total tally for the night. ‘Partnering’, that’s another good word. I should write these down. Has IDW Bought Sunday Press Books?

Confirming rumors that have been circulating the convention floor throughout this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, IDW Publishing has announced that it has acquired Peter Maresca’s critically acclaimed Sunday Press Books, known for its archival work collecting classic American newspaper strips. Since its launch, Sunday Press has worked to collect strips such as Chester Gould’s Dick Tracy, Winsor McCay’s Little Nemo in Slumberland and George Herriman’s Krazy Kat in oversized hardcovers, representing the material in the same dimensions in which it was originally seen. His work has been nominated for multiple awards, with wins from both the Will Eisner Comic Book Awards and Harvey Kurtzman Awards. In a statement accompanying the news, Maresca said, “Since I accidentally became a publisher in 2005, my goal has been to do what no one was willing to do at the time: accurately recreate the experience of reading newspaper comics that were destined to disappear. But the business end has been daunting. Partnering with IDW allows me to take advantage of their experience and infrastructure to reach a broader audience while concentrating on the production of new editions.” “The amazing restoration work and resultant books that Pete Maresca produces through Sunday Press is very much in sync with our own efforts to produce archival-quality reprints of the comics and newspaper strips that built the foundation of our entire industry. We’re all ecstatic to be able to provide the support and publishing acumen to help his gorgeous books reach an even wider audience,” added Chris Ryall, IDW’s president and publisher/chief creative officer. Under the new agreement, Maresca will remain in charge of the Sunday Press output, while IDW will both bring out of print titles back with new editions, and launch a digital publishing program to bring the Sunday Press titles to a new audience. The first title from Sunday Press under IDW will be Little Joe, a collection of uncredited work from Harold Gray, the creator of Little Orphan Annie, released later this year.

icv2.com/articles/news/view/43650/sunday-press-books-now-under-idw-umbrellaSUNDAY PRESS BOOKS NOW UNDER THE IDW UMBRELLA Publisher Specializes in Printing Comic Strips In Original Size & Color Posted by ICv2 on July 19, 2019 @ 10:56 pm CT San Diego Comic-Con News: IDW has announced the inclusion of Peter Maresca’s Sunday Press Books into its publishing family. Sunday Press is a specialty publishing house best known for its beautifully restored reprints of classic newspaper comic strips in their original size and color. Sunday Press books such as Little Nemo in Slumberland, Krazy Kat, and Thimble Theatre have garnered 17 Eisner Award nominations over the past thirteen years. The partnership with IDW and Sunday Press will preserve Maresca’s independence, while bolstering the distribution of the Sunday Press line. IDW plans new printings of acclaimed out-of-print Sunday Press books (many of which are selling way over cover price on Amazon and other resellers), and IDW will also launch a digital publishing program for the Sunday Press books. The Little Joe comic strip was reprinted in comic book form by Dell in the 1940s IDW is no stranger to reprinting classic comic strips (thanks to its ongoing partnership with Dean Mullaney and his Library of American Comics) as well as archival-quality reprints of key comic book titles, such as its Eisner Award-winning Bill Sienkiewicz's Mutants and Moon Knights Artifact Edition. The first Sunday Press collection to come out under IDW’s auspices will be Little Joe, a western comic strip that debuted in 1933 and resembled Harold Gray’s Little Orphan Annie (due to Gray’s uncredited work on the strip that was ascribed to Gray’s assistants). IDW plans to publish the Sunday Press edition of Little Joe in late 2019.
