Legendary TV Options Rural Mystery Series from BOOM! Studios
The trend of television studios drawing from established comic book series continues, as Legendary Television announced it has optioned the Eisner-nominated Grass Kings from BOOM! Studios. Written by Matt Kindt (Mind Mgmt) with art by Tyler Jenkins (Peter Panzerfaust), Grass Kings debuted in 2017 and ran for fifteen issues.
Grant Wheeler and Ben Freiberger, who previously created the sci-fi web series Lifeline for YouTube Red, have been slated to adapt the series. Freiberger and Wheeler will also serve as executive producers for the show, alongside Ross Richie and Stephen Christy from BOOM! Studios. Kindt and Jenkins will co-executive-produce the show, alongside Averie Huffine.
The synopsis of the Grass Kings comic reads,
A rural mystery series that follows Robert Pike as he creates a separatist society among the island homesteads of Alaska to insulate himself against the loss of his murdered daughter. With help from the fellow outcasts and misfits that join him, Robert will grow an off-the-grid community into his ideal civilization. But as his kingdom grows, so does the list of adversaries that threaten to tear down what he’s created. Only with the help of his family can Robert hold the demons within, and without, at bay.
There is no timeline regarding a potential release date, but fans of Kindt and Jenkins' mystery book can begin to speculate on what a television version of the Grass Kingdom and all of its intrigue might look like from Legendary TV.
